CHRISTMAS BUCKET LIST.
Up with the tree, y’all! If you’re like me, then you also like to roll from one holiday to the next and break out the Christmas gear the weekend after Thanksgiving. While we’ve managed to get our tree assembled and mostly decorated, we’re a bit behind this year since we were out of town for the holiday weekend. That means the neighbors got the jump on us and we came home Sunday evening to see their homes decked out with lights while ours still had pumpkins out front. Eeek! It’s on, neighbors!
While we scurry to catch up and accomplish other Christmas-y goals, I don’t want to skimp on all the fun holiday stuff we enjoy doing together. Because newsflash: Christmas can get overwhelming real quick and encroach on quality time. Initially I considered making an advent calendar of activities but as a (mostly) grown-up married couple, we don’t really need the visual countdown and element of surprise (though admittedly, I’m still into that). More than anything, the thought of being locked into a particular activity every day kind of stresses me out. So instead I devised the Christmas Bucket List:

I’ll be damn sure we’re making time for all our fave holiday-related activities if we use this nifty checklist to keep track throughout the month. Our list includes traditions for the most part with a few new activities sprinkled in — ya know, just to keep things interesting. The nice part about following the bucket list is we have the freedom to do what we want, whenever we want. We might not do anything one day or heck, maybe we’ll do two or three things in one day. We’ll be the deciders — we are adults! Here’s what we’re planning:
Decorate the house
Play Christmas music
Pick out a new ornament
Mail Christmas cards
Display Christmas cards received
Trip to Starbucks for seasonal coffees
See a Christmas concert
Watch Christmas movies (at least three)
Donate to a charity
Make a gingerbread house
Drive around to look at Christmas lights
Pick out a gift for Allie
Make hot chocolate
Celebrate Jamie’s birthday (he’s a December baby)
Bake cookies
Make a Christmas craft
Have dinner out at a festive restaurant
Bake eggnog pound cake
Play board games by the tree
Festival of Lights (a local lights display)
Gift wrapping night — order take-out
Go ice skating
Play in the snow with Allie (if it snows)
Make a New Year’s resolution
To be more festive about it, I typed up our list in Word, added some clip art, and printed out a copy to hang on the fridge. Now we’ve got a very visible, daily reminder to make time for the fun stuff! Methinks there’s a new tradition coming on.
What couples’ activities do you like doing around the holidays?
