OLD PENDANT REBORN.
Following the glorious (and long overdue) replacement of the pendant in our foyer, we were left to deal with this guy…

The dreaded dangling orb! We couldn’t stand another minute with this thing in our lives so it seemed bound for the trashcan, or the Goodwill at best. I couldn’t imagine anyone paying anything for this ugly, old sphere with a dim light and dusty brass chain. I even considered taking it out in the backyard, swinging it around like Gogo Yubari and then smashing it against a tree. But upon closer examination…

The orb itself is actually pretty heavy and sturdy — wrought iron, I believe. And rather than being one connected sphere as I expected, there were two halves. Are you thinking what I’m thinking? Decorative bowls, hello!
It’s just like that old saying, “when life hands you an ugly light fixture, make decorative bowls.” So that’s what I did. After giving one of the halves a good wipe down, I hit it up with a few coats of spray paint. I went the failproof glossy white route but a bright, bold color would be fun. (Maybe I’ll do the other half in coral. Or cobalt?)

Once all was dry, I attached some self-stick rubber pads to the bottom in a triangular formation to stabilize the bowl and keep it from scratching any surfaces. Then, it was time for a close-up…

So chic! Actually not bad at all for something that almost ended up in the garbage. Despite the cleaning and revamping, I highly doubt my light-turned-bowl is food-safe so I’ll stick to filling him up with something decorative, like these fake pears.
After playing the “where’s-a-good-spot-for-this” game, I found a new home for him on the bookshelf in the living room very close to where he used to live.

Yes indeed, I think our old light is enjoying his new life as a bowl. And we’re enjoying what is now a much cuter relic from our house’s past. Have you ever transformed something old and junky in your home?

Nice job! I was wondering whether we would be seeing it hanging in one of your trees in the backyard with a candle flickering in it.
Yeah for you! Love the contrasting elements in the bookcase.
M-
What a COOL unexpected outcome!! I love what you did with the first one, and absolutely vote for a bold coral for the second…
Thanks for the comment and for visiting, Carrie! I think I need to go coral spray paint shopping soon.
